APD: Overnight assault leads to four-hour SWAT standoff

A man is in jail after police say he assaulted a family member, resulting in a 4-hour SWAT standoff.

Police responded to a call at the Bel Aire Mobile Home Park on the 800 block of Airport Blvd, just before 11 p.m. Friday night.

According to APD, a 60-year-old man told police that he was assaulted by a family member who was intoxicated. The 20-year-old man then ran inside his home to grab a shotgun.

Police tried to get the man to surrender, but when the man wouldn't exit his home, police on the scene called in SWAT and negotiators. During the SWAT standoff, surrounding homes were evacuated.

At one point the suspect left the scene and made contact with a police officer down the road, "The officers quickly learned that the suspect who had flagged down the officer was the suspect in this incident.  the suspect was wearing very little clothing.  and also had a few minor injuries.  probably from walking barefoot." said officer Bino Cadenas.

The suspect was taken to jail and is facing aggravated assault and family violence charges.

The victim is being treated at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
