Austin police investigating suspicious death in Northeast Austin

APD says officers are at the scene at 9345 E. US 290 eastbound service road.

The Austin Police Department (APD) says a man has been shot and killed during an argument with his neighbor at an Northeast Austin apartment complex.

APD says that around 9:15 a.m. on Feb. 24, officers responded to a shoot/stab hotshot call at the Eryngo Hills apartment complex in the 9300 block of E. US 290 eastbound service road. The call indicated a man had been shot within the complex.

Officers arrived at the scene and found a 30-year-old Black man with obvious trauma next to an apartment door.

Austin Police later identified the victim as Reginald O’Neal Hodge. After Austin-Travis County EMS preformed life-saving measures at the scene, O’Neal was taken to Dell Seton Hospital where he died from his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 9:47 a.m.

A firearm was recovered from the scene and a person of interest and a witness are in custody and have been transported to APD headquarters for further questioning, says APD.

Austin Police say that preliminary information indicates that the incident started as a disagreement between neighbors that turned into a deadly confrontation.

APD is investigating this as the 14th homicide of 2022.

Detectives are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to call APD Homicide at 512-974-TIPS, email homicide.apd@austintexas.gov, utilize the Crime Stoppers tip line at 512-472-8477 (TIPS), or the Crime Stoppers app. You may remain anonymous. APD has responded to a death at this complex before. In September, 29-year-old Ariel Hyder died in a shooting at the same complex. Three men had also been shot and taken to local hospitals, treated and released.
