Rescuers have found the body of a teen that likely drowned Wednesday in Lake Lavon.

Officials said six boys made a 30-foot jump off the train tracks over the water near Lavonia Park just before 7 p.m. One boy, identified as 18-year-old Ibrahim Malik, did not resurface.

The Texas Game Wardens, Collin County Sheriff’s Office, Wylie Fire Department and Nevada Volunteer Fire Department all responded. Rapid dive teams made two unsuccessful attempts, so sonar equipment was brought in.

Rescue crews finally found the boy’s body just before 1 a.m. Thursday. A medical examiner will determine his exact cause of death.

The Wylie Independent School District said Malik was going to be a senior at Wylie High School. The school will open its doors at 6:30 p.m. Thursday so that students can gather for a vigil.

Officials said there are often unseen dangers below the water’s surface that can cause serious harm or even death. They warned people not to jump, dive or swim in unknown waters.
