A nationwide recall has been announced for certain dog and horse medications after glass fibers were discovered floating inside injection vials.
American Regent Inc. said the recall affects select lots of Adequan Canine Injection and Adequan i.m. Injection, medications used to treat joint-related conditions in dogs and horses.

Two lots of Adequan Canine Injection, which is used to treat joint dysfunction in dogs, are included in the recall. Two lots of Adequan i.m. Injection, used to treat joint dysfunction and lameness in horses, are also affected.
Both medications are administered through intramuscular injection and are described as clear, colorless to slightly yellow solutions.

According to the company, the glass fibers were detected during routine testing. American Regent Inc. said no injuries associated with the recalled products have been reported.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using medication from the affected lots and either dispose of it or return it to the manufacturer. Pet owners should also contact a veterinarian if their animals experience any problems that could be connected to the medication.
"The administration of an intramuscular injectable product containing particulate matter, such as glass fibers, may result in local irritation, swelling, inflammation, injection site pain, infection, or abscesses," the company said in its recall notice.
Veterinary hospitals, distributors and retailers have also been directed to return unused recalled products to the manufacturer or properly discard them.
