The Federal Aviation Administration's order to cut flights during the ongoing government shutdown took effect Friday morning.
So far, hundreds of flights have been called off nationwide, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.
Airports in Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas and Phoenix led the way with the most disruptions, FlightAware told the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, air travelers with weekend plans can only sit and wait to learn if their flights will take off as scheduled. And airlines are planning to cancel flights into the weekend, telling passengers to check apps to learn their flight status.

Many of the routes cut on Friday were shuttle flights in the Northeast and Florida along with those between Dallas and smaller cities, the AP reported, citing aviation analytics firm Cirium.
The AP noted that the FAA said the reductions would start at 4% and ramp up to 10% by Nov. 14. They are to be in effect between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and impact all commercial airlines.
