Man arrested for murder after shooting, killing victim in downtown Austin: APD

A man was arrested for murder in connection to a deadly downtown Austin shooting, police said.

The suspect, 25-year-old Zion Singleton, was arrested for first-degree murder.

What happened?

The backstory:

Police said on Jan. 18, around 3:02 a.m., officers responded to the Citgo located at 717 East 7th Street for reports of a shooting. 

When officers arrived, they found a man, 23-year-old Chivalos Lockett, in the passenger seat of a vehicle with gunshot wounds. 

Lockett was taken to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.

The suspect, 25-year-old Zion Singleton, was detained on the scene.

An investigation showed Singleton parked at a gas station pump and was there for some time. At one point, Lockett got into the passenger seat of Singleton's car.

Later, Singleton got out of the car after shooting Lockett.

Singleton is a documented gang member, police said. It is illegal for him to have a gun.

Singleton declined to provide a statement. 

He was arrested for first-degree murder.
