A 4-year-old Dallas boy is in the hospital after police said he was accidentally shot by his 3-year-old brother.

The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at an apartment complex in the Red Bird area of Dallas near Interstate 20 and Highway 67.

Police said the 3-year-old was able to get ahold of a handgun that had been recently purchased. He shot his 4-year-old brother in the abdomen.

The boys’ father was on the way to the hospital with both children when officers stopped him. The wounded boy was then rushed to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.

Police originally said the wounded boy was 5 years old but corrected that he is still 4. He is expected to survive.

Police are still investigating the case and have not yet made any arrests. But they could file charges for injury to a child and making a firearm accessible to a child.
