Remember to stock up on liquor before New Year's Eve

The count down for New Year’s is on.

While it’s known to most Texans that liquor stores are always closed on Sundays, people haven’t had to prepare for New Year’s Eve by Saturday since 2006.

Whether you’re toasting champagne, or taking shots the New Years when the clock strikes midnight, it’s not a bad idea for people to be fully prepared the big night.

Saturday, Sarah White made sure to stop by the liquor store to stock up before counting down to 2018. “I almost forgot and I was going to the grocery store and went ‘oh no,’ I got to get liquor because I won’t be able to get any tomorrow,” said White.

She, like many Texans, knows to stock up because this New Year’s Eve falls on Sunday this year. But not everyone is aware of the lone star state laws.

University of Texas student Ricardo Noyola Lozano said he wasn’t aware of the law. “So you can’t buy liquor on New Year’s Eve? I didn’t know that. I’m really glad we came out today,” said Lozano.

Lozano just like many are stocking up for their big bash but said it was a good thing he stopped by or he would have been left out in the cold. “Because yeah we wouldn’t have had any alcohol for our party,” said Lozano. “We are looking for some tequila, vodka, and whiskey. I’m going to make my famous margarita’s.”

He said to pace yourself when drinking alcohol because you want to start 2018 on the right foot.

“You don’t want to be in the toilette. I drink a lot of water before I go to sleep,” said Lozano.

He said New Year’s is about closing a chapter. “You try to forget last year and go into the new year feeling refreshed. Drink through 2017 or the remainder of it,” said Lozano.

Angie Roman, the Assistant Store Manager of a local Twin Liquors in the Hancock Center in Austin said the store was extra busy. “It's exciting to see the huge demographic of age groups it’s a lot of fun and it's getting busier and busier look at the line forming,” said Roman.

While New Year's Eve is one of the most popular days to drink, remember to always find a safe ride home before heading to your party. "There are so many rides services that can take you home or just plan a get together at home with friends. Have a plan before you leave,” said Roman.

According to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, all liquor stores are required by law to not only be closed on Sundays, but also on New Year’s Day which is Monday.

However, beer and wine can still be sold up until the afternoon.
