Southwest Airlines has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX as part of its fleet modernization plans and "bringing an elevated onboard experience with premium options to our customers," the company said in a press release.

The airline says beginning in late 2026, they will modernize more than half of their Boeing 737-700s, adding in-seat power.

Seating and larger overhead bins

Southwest’s new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft features RECARO R2 BL3710 economy class seats.  The German manufacturer's seats feature a multi-adjustable headrest cushion, an ergonomically enhanced seat bottom, a backrest with lumbar support, and armrest design that maximizes seat width.

Each seat has in-seat power with both a USB-A and USB-C port on each seatback, to charge phones, tablets, laptops, and more.

The aircraft also has an "Extra Legroom" section in the front of the plane and exit rows.  In January, the airline is rolling out new assigned seating, getting away from its open seating boarding process, and passengers will select seats when booking for travel starting Jan. 27, 2026.

Passengers will also find larger overhead bins for carry-on bags. In May, the airline began charging for checked bags, eliminating its long-standing "Bags Fly Free" policy.
