Texas has the worst drivers, study says

Tis the season of travel and you might want to be a little cautious, because Texas drivers are the worst.           That's according to numbers from Car Insurance Comparison and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"I’m definitely not surprised,” said Steven, an Austin driver.

The states were ranked based on five categories like fatalities per 100 million miles traveled, drunk driving, and speeding. Texas ranked the worst in all categories.

“These streets are getting crazy. I just hope everyone is out there driving safely,” said Steven.

Texas tied with Louisiana for the number one spot. The lone star state was third worst for the drunk driving category alone. Austin drivers say they can see why the state has such a low rank.

“I would say it's hectic at times,” said Sohail Shad, driver.

It only adds fuel to the fire, that it can take a while to get around right here in the capital city.

“I live about 9 miles away from campus. It could take up to one hour during rush hour,” said Shad.

Last year, to combat drivers blocking intersections, the city started its “don’t block the box campaign,” looking for careless drivers. Also, the Austin Police Department  continues to run it's no refusal campaign on busy holiday weekends, to catch drunk drivers.

The Texas Department of Transportation recognizes this problem, that's why they started their end the 15-year streak of fatalities campaign this time in 2015.

"The tragedy here is a lot of these deaths that have been happening over 15 years are entirely preventable," said Becky Ozuna with TXDOT last year.

Texas is number one, but not on the correct list. It's going to take some more cautious drivers and sober ones, to get off the top of this list.
