ROUND ROCK, Texas - "The freedom that we have today, that's the reason we do RUCKfest."
Retired U.S. Marines Gunnery Sergeant Zacharias Reeves, co-founder of RUCKfest, and many others gathered on Memorial Day for the event at the American Legion Post 447 in Round Rock.
"We want to get out there and we want to put our body through some hurt to remember our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers for giving us the country that we have now," Reeves says.
"It's a way for us to remember where we came from but at the same time understand that there's a reason for us doing it," Reeves adds.
It was the fifth year for the event at the American Legion. The event was a bit different this year due to COVID-19 guidelines but the reason for doing it didn't change.
Reeves says, "We walk because they can't. They are no longer here so they can't walk. But we have to remember them. We have to remember why our country is what it is."

Those participating did a 22-mile relay which organizers said took about seven and a half hours.
