TxDOT: Previous crash damaged barricade before crash that killed 3

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Department of Transportation said the morning of November 11 a car crashed into the cable barricade on U.S. 183 near the intersection of Stonelake Boulevard. 
                
Just hours later, there was another crash in that same location and, possibly because of the first crash, the cable barricade didn't hold.

Three members of the Latulippe family were killed in that crash, after a suspected drunk driver crossed over the cable barricade and hit their car head-on. 

The Latulippe family was visiting Austin from California when a suspected drunk driver in a Jeep struck their white Fiat on U.S. 183. 
                
Ten-year-old Kiera Latulippe was the only survivor in her family's car. 

Police said 41-year old Guy Brasted is the one who crossed over a cable barricade and hit the Latulippe family's car.
                
Police believe alcohol played a part in that crash as Brasted's blood alcohol concentration measured almost three times the legal limit. 

Another possible factor, a damaged cable barricade that failed to stop Brasted's Jeep from crossing over the median. 

A study by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute found the cable barricade saves countless lives if it is properly maintained. 

Unfortunately for the Latulippe family, the barricade on U.S. 183 near the Stonelake intersection was damaged from another crash earlier that morning. 
                
TxDOT said crews placed a sign alerting drivers to the damaged guardrail and put reflective cones in front of it before the fatal crash happened. The barricade has since been fixed by TxDOT crews.

Brasted is facing two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.
