Victim and dog breed identified in deadly mauling

A Galveston County man is dead after being mauled by a pack of dogs Wednesday afternoon.

According to authorities, the incident happened around 4 p.m. outside a home on Highland Road near Santa Fe.

Authorities say that three cattle dog mixes attacked Jimmy Lee Grigg. They are being quarantined at the animal shelter and are being monitored for rabies. There were two males and a female.

Grigg was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“How do you even let that happen, honestly? Were the dogs not in a pen or what?” asked Katie Ewing, a neighbor.

The unleashed dogs reportedly belong to a relative of the victim. Family members at the scene were visibly emotional following the mauling.

“The family is distraught. They were at the hospital with their loved ones,” Sheriff Trochesset said.

“Every morning for a good month straight, it sounded like there was like dog fights going on,” Ewing said.

The neighbor says she’s filed several complaints with animal control.

“Whenever the animal people would go out there, they said, ‘Oh, it looks all normal to me,’” she continued.

The owner of the dogs surrendered them to the Galveston County Animal Resource Center.

No charges have been filed in this case.
