Intelligentsia Coffee opens up first Texas shop in Austin

Intelligentsia Coffee has opened its first location in Austin and it's first in Texas.

The specialty coffee company began in Chicago and has locations in Los Angeles, Boston and New York City.

The Austin shop is located at 607 W. 3rd in the Third + Shoal building and Austin-based architect Scott Magic sourced materials for it found within 25 miles of the city. In fact the horseshoe shaped bar was built of the same limestone that's used in many Hill Country swimming holes.

Local artist Erin Curtis also created a mural called "We are Living On A Star" which is made of more than 4,800 Elgin Butler bricks.

Six coffee and tea drinks will be on tap including a nitro matcha oat milk latte and a drink exclusive to Austin, the Roadrunner, which is cold coffee, grapefruit juice and soda.

Easy Tiger and Sour Duck are also adding another local touch by providing the food items.

Intelligentsia Regional Manager Angela Winnike says the company "chose to come to Austin because of the amazing coffee community that already existed and we wanted to be a part of it and kind of help grow the coffee market here."

Co-founder Doug Zell is also based out of Austin.
