President Donald Trump’s recent initiative to seize control of Greenland is not considered a popular move in the eyes of many people, including some within the Republican Party.

In a new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, roughly 7 in 10 Americans say they disapprove of how Trump is managing the issue of Greenland compared to only 24% who favor his approach. Greenland is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark.

This poll was conducted between Feb. 5-8, which followed Trump’s decision to dump tariffs created to pressure European countries into supporting U.S. control of Greenland, but after his weekslong push for American intervention over the island.

Trump has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland since his first term in office — and his interest hasn’t changed over time. And in January he renewed his crusade for an American takeover.

Roughly half of Republicans disapprove of Trump’s position on Greenland

The other side: Half of Republicans don’t support President Donald Trump’s effort to turn Greenland into an American territory compared to half in the political party who approve. Trump contends that the U.S. needs Greenland to counter threats from Russia and China in the Arctic region, despite America already having a military presence there.

Separately, the Associated Press referenced a Pew Research Center poll in January, noting that Republicans were divided on whether the U.S. should take over Greenland, while Americans overall were opposed.

Dig deeper: The AP-NORC poll also revealed that younger Republicans also disapproved of how President Donald Trump is overseeing the Greenland situation.

Approximately 6 in 10 Republicans under 45 years old state that they don’t favor Trump’s leadership on Greenland, compared to roughly 4 in 10 older Republicans.

Trump's overall foreign policy approval remains steady

Big picture view:  The Associated Press reported that President Donald Trump ended his threats to seize the territory by force in January after saying a deal over access to Greenland was reached with help from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Even as the president made substantial moves to gain control of Greenland, his overall approval on the issue of foreign policy is steady, with 4 in 10 Americans approving of his approach to foreign policy.
