APD officer will not face charges related to shooting death of Darrin Martin

A Travis County Grand Jury concluded today that Austin Police Department Officer Armando Perez will not face charges related to the April 3, 2016 shooting death of Darrin Martin.

Officer Perez was on routine downtown patrol that morning when he saw the concierge of an apartment building running after another male, later identified as 25 year old Darrin Martin.  Officer Perez caught up to the men in the parking lot at 508 West Avenue where he witnessed the two men scuffling.

When Officer Perez exited his patrol car the concierge explained that he witnessed Martin breaking into a vehicle.

Officer Perez was attempting to handcuff the suspect when the man pulled a gun and shot the officer in the lower torso, beneath his bullet resistant vest.  Perez then returned fire and shot and killed the suspect.

Officer Perez is still recovering from his injuries but has returned to patrol duties.
