Hit and run driver kills teen, injures another

AUSTIN, Texas - UPDATE: Taylor Police are now advising the vehicle involved in this hit and run crash is a 1994 through 1998 Chevrolet or GMC 1500 pickup truck, possibly red in color. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Taylor Police Department at (512) 352-5551. 

Taylor Police are looking for a driver who struck two teenage girls over the weekend killing one.

"It’s a serious crime and it's a tragedy to our community,” said Taylor PD Commander Joseph Branson.

On Saturday night two teenagers went for a walk on a country road in Taylor.

One of them was 16-year-old Sharonda Barrett.

"She was actually out walking her dog which was a common practice for her. She likes to get out and walk. She was pretty active," said Branson.

On the way back home, the girls were walking westbound in the 1000 block of old Thorndale Road when they were hit from behind. Sharonda's body was thrown into a ditch.

"She was breathing for a short time after arrival, but that didn't last long. She passed away," said Branson.

Sharonda's friend was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. She was able to give officers clues as to what type of vehicle hit them.

"We’re looking for a Ford F-150. It’s going to have some damage to the driver side headlight and the driver side side-view mirror," said Branson.

Commander Joseph Branson said his officers collected pieces from the truck at the scene. Now he just needs to find the driver.

"What we're hoping is that whoever is responsible will come forward, be accountable for what happened, process play out and if anyone person might have a tip for us we certainly hope you will give us a call," said Branson.
