Man arrested in connection to Walnut Creek fire in North Austin

Fire investigators have arrested a man in connection to a fire in Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park in North Austin Sunday evening.

According to the Austin Fire Department, fire investigators arrested a 52-year-old man before 7 p.m. Sunday. The man is expected to face second degree felony arson charges officials said. The identity of the man has not yet been released.

AFD said the fire was reported around 5:45 p.m. and was moving through heavy fuels such as grass, leaves and trees. 

Officials said one acre of land was burned. The fire damaged both private and city-owned parkland including a fence firefighters said. 

Fire crews contained the fire around 6:30 p.m., and were able to stop it from reaching an abandoned structure said officials. 

Firefighters said they are working to mop up the area.

No injuries were reported. 

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
