Man in critical condition after shooting, police say

A man is in life-threatening condition after a shooting that happened early Sunday in southeast Austin.

Many residents in the area say their concerned and worried about their safety.

Andrew Garza has lived in southeast Austin for three years and was out shopping; he says he was shocked to hear about the shooting. "You have to be a little more careful with stuff like that going on especially because I live around here."

Around 1:44 a.m., Austin police responded to a possible stabbing on Riverside, near Burton Drive. When they arrived police say they found a 31-year old man who had been shot.

The man was taken to the hospital with possible life-threatening injuries police say.

After hearing the news Garza says it's important to be aware of your surroundings. "It's kind of alarming to hear about things happening so close to where you are at," said Garza.

He suggests adding more police patrols to the area may help keep people safe.

"I see cops rolling around here from time to time but it wouldn't hurt especially with stuff like that happening now with people lives I would patrol harder. Maybe add more to these lots where the stuff goes down in these little night clubs I would have more security around there," said Garza.

FOX 7 investigated police reports of crimes in the neighborhood and here's what was found.

In the last 30 days there have been more than 40 assaults ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to assault with a motor vehicle. Thirteen aggravated robberies with a deadly weapon.

And last week, an officer was assaulted while on duty in this neighborhood.
