More than 1,000 flu-related cases reported in Texas

The number of flu-related deaths and cases continues to rise across Texas.

The 2017-2018 flu-season has yet to hit its peak.

The Texas Department of Health Services is reporting 1,153 flu-related deaths from October to early January and 139 in region seven. According to the DSHS region map, region 7 has 30 counties including Travis County.

Austin Public Health has reported 11 flu-related deaths as of Thursday all over the age of 50. DSHS said the strand most predominate is H3N2 which is found in the most severe cases. DSHS press officer Lara Anton said the department can’t stress how quickly the virus has spread and ask the public to get vaccinated.
