Phone scam affecting Hays County residents
A phone scam in Hays County is costing some victims thousands of dollars, according to the Hays County Sheriff's Office.
Officials say the victims typically receive a phone call from the 512 area code from someone claiming to be a Hays County Sheriff's Office employee. The victims are told they have a warrant out for their arrest and must pay up to avoid being arrested. The scammer tells the victims to buy prepaid Visas or MasterCards and give the number to them. If they comply, the scammer tells the victims the warrants will be recalled. Hays County Sheriff's Office says many victims have been senior citizens.
The office is reminding the public it is not custom or practice for them to contact any person by phone, demanding payment in order to avoid arrest. Anyone can verify if they have a warrant for arrest by contacting the Hays County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division at 512-393-7810 or 512-393-7827.
Hays County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to call them at 512-393-7896 and speak with the Criminal Investigations Division or 1-800-324-TIPS if they have any information.
