Texas primary packed with intrigue beyond presidential race
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Primary day drama promises to be outsized in Texas, despite the lack of any statewide races on the Texas ballot.
Texas is awarding 155 Republican and 251 Democratic delegates, making it the crown jewel of the Super Tuesday presidential primaries.
All 36 congressional seats are on the ballot, although many will lack competitive primaries. The same goes for the 150 members of the Texas House and 16 state senators as Republicans are almost assured that their solid majorities in both chambers of the Legislature will continue.
Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick aren't up for re-election but have endorsed Texas Senator Ted Cruz's Republican presidential run. Cruz is favored to win Texas but may not take all the delegates amid stouter-than-expected challenges from Donald Trump and Marco Rubio.
