Texas Rangers asking for indictment of Rep Dawnna Dukes

The Texas Rangers will be asking a Travis County Grand Jury to indict State Representative Dawnna Dukes, the Travis County District Attorney's office confirmed.

The Texas Rangers will present a case next Tuesday, January 17 on allegations the Democrat House member used state funds for personal use.

Dukes was present at the opening of the 85th Legislative session on Tuesday. Last Fall Dukes announced she would not return for the session, even if she was re-elected. She cited health issues related to a car crash in 2013 as the reason.

When Dukes made the announcement, the investigation into her spending was underway. In April 2016, the Texas Rangers joined the criminal probe. In 2016 reports surfaced that some of her staffers claimed she was trying to be compensated for travel expenses she wasn't entitled to. Other allegations were raised about staff members working for her for personal reasons on the taxpayer dime.

FOX 7 reached out to Dukes for comment after the decision to send the case to a grand jury. FOX 7 also reached out to the Houston attorney believed to be representing Dukes, he did not return a request for comment either.
