Whole Foods hacked, Taqueria Venue at N. Lamar affected

Another day, another cyber-security hack. This time it's Whole Foods.

One of the country's most popular grocery chains said it suffered a data breach of credit card information affecting at least one of our local stores.

Matt Schulz is a Senior Industry Analyst at creditcards.com, “The sad part is these breaches are going to keep happening and keep happening because there's so much to gain for the bad guys trying to get your data.”

Whole Foods released a statement Thursday saying in part: "Recently received information regarding unauthorized access of payment card information used at certain venues."

"Certain" being the key word as it goes on to explain the breach is limited to taprooms and full table-service restaurants making it clear they operate on a different system than the primary grocery store's checkout system. More than 40 Whole Foods stores sell beer on tap.

There's no listed number of how many restaurants are in its stores though. On its website, the Taqueria venue at the North Lamar store is one of those affected. Whole foods said an investigation is ongoing.

Schulz said if your information hasn't been breached yet, it's probably going to happen at some point.

“Your best move is to just assume your information is out there and watch out for your own money.” Schulz recommends, checking your credit reports on a regular basis, and checking your online bank and credit card statements at least once a week.

“We think nothing of checking Facebook or Instagram 10 times a day, but it just seems like too much to ask to check your bank statements once a week. It's not, it doesn't take all that long and it's really important.”

Really important Schulz said because it's not if it's going to happen anymore, it's when. “This is not something that is going away, it's something that you just need to build into your financial routine going forward.”

Schultz said you can get some peace of mind and sign up for a credit monitoring service but those do cost money, and you can do it yourself for free. He also said www.creditcards.com has a score and report app that is super helpful and free. Click here for more information.
