5 Comal ISD campuses given all clear after school threat investigation

Five Comal ISD campuses in the Canyon Lake High School feeder pattern were given the all-clear after a potential school threat on Thursday.

What we know:

According to the Comal County Sheriff's Office, on April 2, the department received a 911 call reporting a potential school threat at a high school.

Out of an abundance of caution, Comal ISD placed five campuses on "secure" while deputies investigated the threat. The schools impacted are listed below:

  • Rebecca Creek Elementary
  • Mountain Valley Elementary
  • Startzville Elementary
  • Mountain Valley Middle School
  • Canyon Lake High School

During the investigation, all students and staff were safe. At no time was anyone in danger.

On Thursday afternoon, the sheriff's office said all campuses were cleared and the "secure" status was lifted. Students and staff have resumed a normal school day.

"We understand situations like this can be concerning. We appreciate the strong coordination between law enforcement and the school district to ensure the safety of our students and staff," the sheriff's office said.

Bulverde school shooting

The backstory:

On Monday, March 30, law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire at the Hill Country College Preparatory High School campus.

Investigators say a teacher was shot by a 15-year-old male student, who then turned the gun on himself. Law enforcement says the student had brought the gun, a .357 revolver, from his home.

The school was placed under lockdown and students were transported to a nearby middle school for reunification with their parents and guardians.

The campus remains closed for the rest of the week due to the ongoing investigation and to allow for students and staff to process the shooting.

Investigators believe the student may have been experiencing academic difficulties, but any prior disciplinary history is currently unknown.

Investigators also executed a search warrant at the student's home and seized several electronic devices for forensic examination.
