A handful of families now able to return home following Georgetown gas leak evacuation

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - After being evacuated for days, a handful of families are now being let back into their homes in Georgetown.

A gas leak back in February lead to more and more homes and businesses needing to be evacuated. While some are now free to return, they are still uneasy as their neighbors are still evacuated.

“There’s holes everywhere in my front yard it’s like why would I feel safe here right now,” said Caitlynn Caskey who was allowed to return home.

Atmos has let around 4 families return so far.

“It’s shocking that we’re back even because it’s ongoing work day and night,” said Amber Vasterling who was allowed to return home.

When a gas leak was found back in February off Williams Drive in Georgetown, both Caskey and Vasterling watched as more and more of their neighbors evacuated until eventually it was time for their homes.

“They just kept getting closer and closer and then we were gone,” said Vasterling.

Now, after all this time, Atmos Energy has cleared a couple homes, marking them safe to live in once again.

“It hasn’t been fun especially with a family of six it’s been really hard,” said Vasterling.

What was 72 homes now sits at 68 still evacuated along with 65 businesses. While they are able to return home Vasterling said they still have a lot of questions.

“They gave my husband a phone call and said that we can return home and that was the end of that they just said we can go back as soon as possible,” said Vasterling.

The constant work in the area also draws concerns.

“Yeah sleeping is very difficult the sound never stops and it seems louder at night because there’s no other noise going around,” said Vasterling.

Caskey said her family still doesn’t want to move back home just yet as a lot of her area is still under an evacuation.

“How am I safe or how am I unsafe versus the people across the street,” said Caskey.

As crews continue to work and their neighbors still evacuated, both families worry this ordeal is far from over.

Atmos Energy said the last time they had to evacuate a building was Friday. There is no word on if other homes would soon be able to return back.
