Austin Central Library named finalist for Public Library of the Year

The Austin Central Library is among five finalists throughout the world for Public Library of the Year by the International Federation of Library Associations.

The other finalists are libraries from Brazil, Netherlands, Norway and Singapore. The City of Austin says the award is given every year to a new library. The award takes into account local culture, sustainability, digital development and the wishes and needs of users.

"Austin has one of the greatest libraries in the world, as this nomination confirms,” said Austin Mayor Steve Adler in a statement. “Our library stands as a testament to the great things we can accomplish together."

The Austin Central Library has six floors, over 100 computers, an art gallery and a cafe. The building was recognized for its focus on sustainability and its interior design.

The winner will be announced on Aug. 28 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the IFLA Annual Meeting.
