Austin ISD opens voting on 2020-21 school year calendar

The Austin Independent School District has opened voting on the calendar for the 2020-21 school year.

AISD has three calendar options to vote on. The survey closes at midnight on Friday, December 13.

AISD says all three calendars include 187 teacher contract days and 23 staff holidays. Independence Day (July 6, 2020), Labor Day (Sept 7, 2020), Martin Luther King Jr Day (Jan. 18, 2021), Spring Break (March 15-19, 2021), and Memorial Day (May 31, 2021) are all the same across all three calendars, as well as high school final exam days before winter break and elementary parent conference days on Oct. 12, 2020 and Feb. 15, 2021.

The first draft, Draft A, matches the 2019-20 calendar, with the school year starting on Aug. 11, 2020 for teachers and Aug. 18, 2020 for students. It offers the week off at Thanksgiving, nine days off for staff and 12 days off for students for the winter break, five districtwide and two secondary-only student holidays/staff development days, three planning and prep days, two professional learning exchange days/student holidays, and two bad weather makeup days.

Draft A ends the school year for students on May 26, 2021 and for teachers on May 27, 2021.

Draft B is very similar to Draft A, but only offers three days off at Thanksgiving, ten days off for staff for the winter break, and one additional holiday on Oct. 9, 2020.

Draft C has the school year begin on Aug. 12, 2020 and on Aug. 19, 2020 for students. There are two less instructional days in the fall and two more in the spring. The calendar offers the week off at Thanksgiving and 11 days off for students and nine days off for staff for the winter break.

Draft C ends the school year for students on May 27, 2021 and for teachers on May 28, 2021.
