The Atlanta-based Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports 155 cases this year of a rare, polio-like condition affecting mostly children.

The disease is called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM. So far, cases have been confirmed across 22 states.

Many more cases have been reported, including three in Georgia. The three children affected in Georgia are also in that age range, state officials said.

The condition affects the nervous system and affects fewer than 1 million people a year.

The CDC says the number of patients under investigation is up from 127 patients a week ago.

That's an increase of 28 cases in a matter of days.
