Cedar Park arsonist arrested

Cedar Park Police say they have arrested the man responsible for setting a bank on fire last May. A skirt wearing suspect had been caught on the Lone Star Bank's surveillance camera. But all police say they had to go on was that video and a description of the car.

28-year old Kiril Belchenko was in jail on an unrelated charge when investigators made the discovery.

"He basically admitted to the crimes while in the custody of the Williamson County Jail," says Cedar Park Police Chief Sean Mannix, adding, "And in following up on the leads we had, including the video evidence and positive identification from a family member we were able to charge him with that particular arson which is a second degree felony."

Investigators also believe Belchenko is behind four other arsons that happened in the area between last February and last May.

"What they have in common," says Cedar Park Fire Chief James Malinger, "is that they happened close to each other, at approximately the same time of day, and under the same situations."

Currently, Belchenko is only being charged with the arson at the bank. He is being held in the Williamson County jail on a one-hundred and fifty-thousand dollar bond.

Belchenko's crime record dates back to 2009, he did serve time in jail for burglary. If he is found guilty of the arson charge, he could face up to twenty years behind bars.

Chief Mannix says charges for the other arsons could be filed soon.

"Hopefully he stays cooperative with them and working with other physical evidence that we do have and hoping to determine his culpability in those other arsons as well."
