Community gathers to hunt over 50,000 easter eggs
It was a Texas-sized celebration of an Easter tradition that helped kickoff the holiday weekend. Over 1,000 people gathered at the Austin Oaks Church in southwest Austin for the fourth annual Easter Eggstravaganza.
Hundreds of kids, and even some parents, armed with their buckets, bags, and baskets wasted no time filling them up.
"We had a lot of fun watching all the kids get out and hunt for easter eggs," Amanda Egbert said.
Austin Oaks senior pastor Rob Harrell said the event has steadily grown over the years and has brought the community together.
"This is just a great way to see (the children) thrilled and happy and enjoying the day and really the opportunity to think more deeply into spiritual things," he said.
More important than the number of eggs collected or the amount of candy in bag, was the lesson the children will go home with.
"All holidays are special but it's fun to watch them learn and understand what all the holidays are about and be able to tell other people what the importance of the holidays are," Egbert said.
"Some people get caught up in easter eggs and easter bunnies and stuff like that and that's all right but we want to really be focused on the reason for this weekend: The sacrifice of Jesus and his resurrection, which we are so excited to celebrate," Harrell said.
