Fatal shooting at Austin apartment happened as kids where returning from school

A man is dead following a shooting at the Heights on Parmer apartment complex in north Austin.

It happened just before 3 Tuesday afternoon. At this time police are still trying to identify a suspect.
APD assures the public is not in any dangers as they believe this is an isolated incident.

Many resident at the apartment are on edge.

“Scary, it’s scary, I’m moving at the end of the month, probably before, probably now, I’m afraid for my life now,” said Shelia Hurick.

The shooting happened around the same time Hurick’s 9-year-old nephew was coming home from school.

“He jumped off the bus came in the house and said that somebody got shot and killed,” said Hurick. 

Crews quick to respond.

“Officers along with fire and EMS arrived on scene.   APD found a subject laying on the ground on the northern end of the complex,” said Bino Cadenas with Austin police.

Cadenas assuring people in the area they aren’t in any danger.

“The incident was very isolated to a specific section of the apartment building,” said Cadenas.

APD spent the day interviewing witnesses and going through evidence.

“We reached out to the leasing office, we looked at surveillance video, that’s all going to be apart of the investigation,” said Cadenas.

While the events have shaken Hurick and her neighbors, she said her nephews taking it even harder.

“He even saw the body and was terrified,” said Hurick.

For now Hurick said she will be keeping an eye out for her family’s safety 

APD is asking the public for any information on this case. At this time a suspect as not been identified.
