Inmate escapes from Hays County Law Enforcement Center

SAN MARCOS, Texas— Hays County authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped custody from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

Omar Maya-Rangel, 29, was doing landscape work at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center when he reportedly escaped shortly after 1 P.M. The center is located on 1307 Uhland Road in San Marcos.

Hays County officials describe Maya-Rangel as a Hispanic male, whose last known residence was in the Kyle area.

Maya-Rangel was serving time for theft and credit card abuse charges. Officials said he does not appear to be a threat to the community.
