Mother says disabled son had his walker taken
Two and half year-old Henry Ferry is your typical toddler. He's a musical little guy who likes to get his hands on any instrument he can.
But, it's been difficult for him to get around since his posterior walker went missing. Henry's mother Liz Ferry said it's the only way he can walk on his own.
"He crawls to get from place to place in the home," said Liz.
Henry was born with CHARGE syndrome. It's a rare diagnosis caused by a genetic disorder. He suffers from hearing loss, vision loss, and balance problems. The syndrome also delays his development and communication.
On Jan. 18, Henry was dropped off from school in front of his home where his mother usually picks him up.
"That day he was crying when he got off the bus so I just set the stuff down and carried him in," said Liz.
After hours passing by Liz said she realized she forgot the walker in the front yard. She asked her older son to grab it only to find out it was missing.
"I was mortified and pretty devastated. I feel like it was my mistake for leaving them outside so close to the street," said Liz.
Liz said the walker is replaceable but it's taken away independence from her son.
"It's much more valuable to Henry because he relies upon them. And now he doesn't really have that independence," said Liz.
Liz said she reported the theft to Austin police. But said she hopes it was just a simple misunderstanding.
"Sometimes people do put things out by the street to give away. Somebody must have thought we were giving these away. I thought great here I have accidently giving my son's medical equipment," said Liz.
Liz also turned to social media for help, posting pictures of Henry with his walker. "Get the word out. Or maybe somebody would know somebody who had brought something home and maybe bring it back."
Liz said the situation has taught her a lot.
"I've had very supportive comments and people a lot of people offering to help us pay the deductible to replace the items. One person said he worked for a medical supply company and could obtain replacements for the items," said Liz.
Liz is holding onto hope that someone somewhere will return the walker and with it a young boys independence.
"If you grabbed them by mistake just put them on our porch no questions asked," said Liz.
According to Liz, Henry has health insurance which will cover some of the medical items taken.
