Phoenix hiker freed after becoming trapped between boulders

PHOENIX (AP/KSAZ) - A man on a Thanksgiving hike in Phoenix appears uninjured after becoming trapped between two boulders.

Phoenix fire officials say crews responded to South Mountain on Thursday to reports of a hiker being pinned and unable to free himself.

Fire Capt. Danny Gile says the 50-year-old man had slipped and fallen 2-3 feet (0.61-0.91 meters). He landed right between the two large boulders.

Gile says firefighters were eventually able to lift him out of the crevice and the man was able to walk down the mountain without assistance. He did not require additional medical care or hospital transport and was especially grateful.

"It's an experience to be in a situation like that, and I was worried for a while, the harder it was becoming to breathe and you kind of wonder," he said. "Today is a good day to be thankful and I'm so thankful for the Phoenix Fire Department and park rangers that called the fire department. It's just amazing how you get to the point where it's like, am I gonna get out of here? And they came to my rescue and I'm so appreciative of that."

No firefighters were injured during the rescue.
