School Choice Week march and rally at Capitol

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - Hundreds of people supporting education reform are once again joining together to fight to change Texas law as they gather for a rally at the State Capitol for School Choice Week.

People from all over Texas are coming to Austin for today's march and rally. Land Commissioner George P. Bush and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz are expected to speak.

The event is from 10-11:30 a.m. People will meet at the East Lawn of the Capitol and then march to the south steps of the building for the rally.

Changing the public education system in Texas is one of the biggest topics of the legislative session. 

Many believe giving parents the option to pick the right school for their child is one way to solve the issue.

During National School Choice Week, schools, organizations and individuals educate families about the options they have to give their children the best education.

There are 40,000 events planned nationwide.

But it doesn't come without controversy. Critics argue that programs take away money and students from struggling schools and that it may actually cost parents more in the long run.

Texas does have options for families. They can choose public, charter, magnet or private schools as well as online learning and homeschooling.

Educators are hoping that parents will use this week to find resources and attend events so that they can learn about what schooling option is best for their child.
