According to police, Stevenson arrived at the Serenity Star facility around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Stevenson's ex-wife, who is a resident of the facility, was asking him to leave when she noticed that he had a handgun on him. Stevenson's ex-wife reentered the facility and told the other residents to leave.

As residents were fleeing the scene, Stevenson pulled out his gun and used it to break a window and gain access to the Serenity Star facility.  Stevenson barricaded himself inside the facility. When officers arrived on scene and made contact with Stevenson, he indicated that he wanted to commit suicide.

Stevenson eventually surrendered himself to officers without further incidents and was taken into custody.
