Video: Drone carrying drugs crashes into Lutz home, suspect arrested after knocking on door

Hillsborough County deputies say a man's aerial drug delivery took a wrong turn when he crashed his drone into a home, then showed up at the door trying to get it back.

The backstory:

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, homeowners in the 18500 block of Hannah Michaela Ln. in Lutz called early Tuesday after a man crashed his drone into their home, then knocked on their front door.

Body camera video released by the sheriff's office shows Jason Brooks, 49, telling deputies the drone was in the backyard of the home.

A deputy can be heard telling Brooks, "You know, we can't just be going in people's backyards," to which Brooks replied, "I know, that's why I knocked."

HCSO says the homeowners turned over the drone, along with multiple bags of methamphetamine and fentanyl, to deputies.

The homeowners said they heard a clattering sound against the back of their house.

They saw a flashing light on the drone in their backyard and brought it inside to figure out what it was.

"He picks up the drone when he sees that the drone has a brown cloth bag attached to it," Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

The homeowners were shocked when they discovered what was inside.

"Inside this cloth bag is four other bags," Chronister said. "Three bags with fentanyl powder and one bag of methamphetamine. Each bag has a person's name written on the bag and then the methamphetamine had 'Share' on it."

The homeowners say they immediately called the sheriff's office. Before deputies arrived, they say their security camera captured a man with a flashlight knocking on the door three separate times.

Deputies found Brooks outside the home when they arrived.

"He's out front in the driveway, holding the remote control for the drone that just crashed, and being an experienced criminal, he plays very coy about, 'I was flying my drone. I live about a mile away, and I believe it crashed in this area, and I'm going in the backyard trying to find my drone'," Chronister said.

Big picture view:

Chronister says Brooks is a 15-time convicted felon.

"There's no doubt he was trying to go undetected," Chronister said.

The Sheriff says investigators will look at drone data to try to determine the path and destination of the drugs.

Brooks made a first appearance virtually before a Hillsborough County judge Wednesday afternoon.

The judge granted him bond on the charges in this case, but he's being held without bond on a warrant out of Pasco County for failure to appear.

Brooks faces the following charges:

  • Possession of controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver
  • Possession of controlled substance
  • Driving while license canceled, suspended or revoked
  • Attaching tag not assigned
  • Operating unregistered vehicle
  • Out of county warrant (failure to appear in Pasco County)

Jail records show Brooks is being held without bond due to the outstanding warrant.
