Vandegrift boys golf team wins state title

The Vandegrift boys golf team headed into the tournament as two time defending state champs.

The team had a 19 stroke lead thanks to performances by Brandon Hoff and Baylor bound senior Coooper Dossey.

Dossey headed in as the individual leader but ended tweaking his back on the 12th. He fought through it and shoots nine under for the tourney to win the gold by eight strokes.

The Vipers shoot four under as a team to end up winning by seven strokes.

Speaking to FOX 7, Dossey said he thought he was going to withdraw after he tweaked his back but kept going thanks to support from his teammates, coaches and his faith. He admits that the situation wasn't great.

"Yeah, on hole 12 I really couldn't walk. I sat down for awhile and it was so bad that I had to have someone tee it up for me. Get it out of the hole. Mark my ball. I couldn't bend down," Dossey said.

Vandegrift boys head golf coach Matt Wernecke was amazed at Dossey's performance.

"What he did on the last six wasn't human. I walked with him the last six and he was legitimately couldn't walk. Couldn't stand up," Wernecke said.

Despite being in pain, Dossey said he knew he wasn't going to quit. "There's a saying on our tea. Excuses not welcome. So I really had to push through."

In the end, Dossey finished on top after finishing third two years ago and runner up last year. But he said while it's "awesome" he feels "the only thing that matters to me is our team and that they won."
