APD: 43 lost, stolen cell phones so far at ACL

The Austin Police Department is urging everyone to be more aware of your surroundings. So far this year at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, there have been 43 lost or stolen cell phones.

APD says people have no concept of their personal space.

They say phones, cash, and IDs need to be where you can see them. They're also advising people to not keep their credit card in a pouch that attaches to the back of your phone.

Last year there were 120 phones recovered from out of state at the festival.

APD Sgt. Noel Gueran says this happens because “of the sheer number of people and sheer volume of people in a confined space."

"I think there is a criminal nexus that is organized that trains and does a very good job taking people's stuff from them when they're not paying attention," Gueran said.

APD says this year, there will be a line of police when attendees walk in the venue which is more assertive than in the past.

Sgt. Gueran says he hopes this shows people APD is paying more attention and trying to be more proactive when it comes to people's safety.
