Area soccer players react to 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - Friday, France swept South Korea, 4-0 in the first game of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Watching was Jamie Woodfill and Liz Amanda-Brown of FC Austin Elite.

“When the World Cup rolls around, so we see a peak. What we’re trying to do is keep the peak, not have it like go back down you know kind of sustain it.” said Woodfill.

Brown is familiar with the peaks and valleys associated with the sport. As a former professional player, the world cup brings her back. “[My former team] had to delay the season actually. We would have our contract in the beginning of the season, and then they were terminated right after, because they couldn’t pay us on off season to train.”

When she watches the World Cup she sees progress.

“I could see how the generation before me was fighting very hard for even women’s sports in total.”

She also sees progress, she believes needs to be made.

“It’s what we do now to affect the future.”

In the game, Woodfill sees a path to a brighter future for the sport. “It’s the little kids that start watching it and start falling in love and then the next thing you know they’re the girls who are setting an example.”
