Austin releases details on upcoming free New Years party

2019 is just around the corner, Austin plans to host its annual celebration Monday afternoon ahead of the ball drop.

The city plans to kick start their free New Year’s party around 3 p.m. on the 31st. If you plan on coming you may want to plan how you'll get here a head of time as some roads will be closed off and parking options aren't free.

“We invite you to come out and join us and hear some of that fantastic music,” said Kathie Tovo the Austin mayor pro tem.

The city spent Friday releasing details on its upcoming New Year’s party.

“Austin's New Year is a way for the city of Austin to honor its commitment to promoting and supporting our local businesses here in the city of Austin and our local musicians,” said Tovo.

The free event kicks off Monday, new year’s eve, around 3 p.m. at Vic Mathias shores.

“We invite everyone to bring lawn chairs and blankets, stay awhile,” said Bill Manno the corporate special events program manager.

This year there is plenty to do with the family.

“Riding on a trackless train to going and exploring your inner artist at our crafts area,” said Tovo. “A lot of great food, a lot of entertainment, a lot of activities for all ages,” said Manno.

And of course there will be live music. “It is a great opportunity to bring your friends and your family down to this free family event,” said Tovo.

If you do plan to make your way to the party, there are a few things to keep in mind.

“South 1st street bridge will be closed, riverside drive from Lamar to south 1st street will be closed majority of the day,” said Manno, “One east bound lane on east Cesar Chavez will be closed.”

While the party it's self is free, the parking won’t be. This year there will not be any free parking areas and parking in the nearby neighborhood is prohibited. Instead, people can pay to park in nearby garages like the city hall garage or one Texas center.

While this is a pet friendly event, you are urged to take them home before the fireworks begin which will be at 10.

Don't want to get stuck trying to find a place to park? The city is urging people to let someone else handle the driving- like cap metro or ride share.

Ride share drop offs will be at the one Texas Center.

E-scooters should be parked at the bike parking area.
