Big topics on agenda before Austin City Council's break
The Austin City Council is set to take on several big topics on its agenda today including deciding if Austin will get a Major League Soccer team.
It's the council's last meeting until August and there's a lot of things to take care of before they go on break.
One is the city's big bond package. Council hasn't put it in on the November ballot but today they'll talk about what will be included in the $816 million bond. Right now the money would be used for affordable housing, improving parks, transportation and about $38 million for public safety.
The council will also vote on taxi rates. Since the rise of ride hailing services like Uber and Lyft, the transportation department says it's seen a huge drop in business when it comes to taxis. Members are expected to vote on an ordinance to change the way taxis operate when it comes to pricing.
Perhaps the most anticipated items are the ones concerning soccer. It's a question of whether council wants to get the ball rolling on soccer negotiations or if they also want city staff to consider other ideas.
The soccer and bond items are expected to be saved for the very end of the day.
