Central Texas Officers honored at Top Cop Awards in Washinton D.C.
The Austin Police Officer credited with stopping last year's shooting at the Omni Hotel is being given top honors for his heroic actions.
Last July, 35-year-old Michael Holt walked into the Omni Hotel in downtown Austin and opened fire. 60-year-old cab driver Conrado Contreras was killed. Video released by APD shows Officer Carlos Lopez springing into action with his rifle.
After an exchange of fire, Lopez fired the fatal shot killing Holt and preventing any more deaths.
His actions have brought him to Washington D.C. for the 2016 Top Cop Awards. Lopez was nominated by his peers.
The National Association of Police Organizations selected Lopez's case from hundreds of nominations to be one of this year's 10 Top Cops.
