Daytona Beach installing donation stations for homeless
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (FOX 35 Orlando) - Taking a cue from Orlando and other cities around the country, Daytona Beach is setting up donation stations for the homeless that resemble and function like a parking meter.
These special meters are brightly colored and marked with signage, identifying them as donation stations. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that one of the meters was recently installed at Breakers Oceanfront Park and several more are planned around the city.
The devices will accept coins or select credit cards, and other than a small credit card fee, all proceeds will go to helping the homeless.
The city recently enacted a new ordinance banning panhandlers from certain zones. The panhandlers must be 20-to-150-feet away from driveways and intersections. A person caught violating the new ordinance could be subject to a $200 fine or jail time.
