Driver, 14, impaled by fence during car crash

A Florida teenager was critically injured during a single-car crash, in which she was impaled after colliding into a fence post.

Authorities said the crash happened shortly before 5 a.m. on Tuesday, in Marion County, along County Road 329 and near Northwest 125th Street Road.

In pictures released by Marion County first responders, you can see the fence went through two spots in the windshield.   The driver, a 14-year-old girl, was the sole occupant of of the vehicle.

Residents in the area said they heard the sirens and looked out to find a nearly 50-foot section of the fence missing.

"That’s terrible! Absolutely terrible!" said a woman who lives near the crash site.  "I can’t imagine being her mother." 

The girl was transported by helicopter to University of Florida Health Shands Hospital  in Gainesville.  The crash remains under investigation.
