Driver dies after jumping from MoPac bridge following collision

UPDATE: The Austin Police Department is investigating a crash that happened on the Northbound side of MoPac on Saturday afternoon, leaving one man dead.

APD says multiple 911 calls came in around 4:24 PM about a reckless driver weaving in-and-out of traffic. Witnesses told officials a silver SUV hit the guardrail and that the driver deliberately jumped into Lady Bird Lake.

APD and EMS were on scene for several hours. Crews scouring the lake in hopes of a rescue. The Austin Fire Department was on scene, too. APD's dive team relieved EMS and AFD.

They went into the water around 6:30 PM and after spotting something an hour-- or so-- later, they went in with more equipment to make the recovery. APD says witnesses gave them a general location about where the man landed and that helped them pinpoint their search area.

The man's body was recovered from Lady Bird Lake, but why he jumped remains one of the questions they are trying to answer. He is being described as a black male in his mid-30's. His identity is not being released, pending notification of next of kin.
