Gas prices continue to drop, lowest since 2009

Filling up at the pump can be somewhat of a hassle but it's become a lot easier on our wallets here in Austin. The average price of gas in the city is a $1.64, the lowest its been since 2009.

"The demand is less right now during the winter months and also in the fall months but also the ample supply in the market, you've just got large inventories of product globally," Doug Shupe, AAA Texas spokesman, said.

And that global surplus of oil, is leading to a surplus of money in the wallets of most consumers.

"I'll be like 'oh yeah put $20 on pump five, we good, fill it up," Just Brittany, a musician, said.

"AAA Texas estimates that every driver in America, every licensed driver, saved about $550 on their fuel costs in 2015," Shupe said.

Savings that are helping people like Just Brittany, who spends most of her time on the road.

"The extra money can go to more studio time, better food, and other things that i like to do," Brittany said.

It is also helping Donald Cecil enjoy more date nights with his wife.

"(We) go out to dinner maybe once, more often than (we) use to."

Even though Cecil has saved at the pump, he still has his worries.

"I'm kind of concerned that it is fools gold, it's almost like 'how long is this going to last?" Cecil said.

According to AAA Texas, it could last throughout 2016.

"Even with the seasonal increases we are expecting to see this year, barring any significant disruptions to supply or distribution or a major increase to the price of crude oil, analysts believe that gas prices here in the state of Texas and around the nation will remain below the$3.00 per gallon mark through the rest of this year," Shupe said.

Shupe said there are a number of apps that can be used to track the lowest price of gas including the AAA mobile app. Which finds the lowest prices of gas around your neighborhood, route to work, or on the way to your vacation destination.
