Harvey relief volunteers and supplies still needed in La Grange

It’s been a month since Hurricane Harvey left a swath of destruction through parts of Central Texas.

La Grange was one of those cities badly flooded.

People in La Grange said at first hundreds of volunteers and support came pouring in to help but now those numbers are dwindling. "People have no homes they've lost everything," said Jessica Melton a volunteer.

Melton said she’s been a part of cleanup efforts from the beginning and has seen an out powering amounts of help flood in. "The first couple of days we had in the hundreds right around 500 to 700 volunteers," said Melton. She said that number has started to dwindle down.

"As weeks have gone on and it's gotten further out from Hurricane Harvey we've seen a big hug drop off of volunteers on a weekly basis.  Sometimes groups of 20 to now sometimes eight or ten come out to volunteer and help," said Melton.

As Melton looked around the Country Way Village Mobil home park Friday she couldn't help but see the work that still needs to be done. "My mission is to be able to see each one of those property owners to be able to get into a home maybe not by Christmas but soon,” Melton said.

She said not only do they need volunteers they’re in need of much more. "We need supplies, supplies are just as important whether it's sheet rod or mud or roofing material," said Melton.

She said the Mobil home park was hit the hardest and was home to hundreds of people.

"Many of them if not all were a 100% totaled,” said Melton.

However, the area has not yet received cleanup efforts.

"Trying to work with the owners and managers to try to come up with a game plan and see how we can help this neighborhood out that's been really affected and untouched yet."

She said all volunteers are welcomed.

“We are able to take in volunteers that have never even picked up a hammer, we can train them or teach them what to do,” said Melton.  "We also have lots of trash on the ground, you don't have to have a skill set you just need a trash bag and two willing hands."
