Hays CISD substitute teacher fired after making abortion joke

A Hays CISD substitute teacher has been fired because he made a joke about an abortion in a classroom. It happened on February 19 at Lehman High School in Kyle.

District officials say a student put a balloon under her shirt and joked that she was pregnant. The substitute then reportedly held up a pair of scissors and said it was "time for an abortion."

District officials say, "Whether or not the gesture was intended as a joke is not relevant...the action shows a lack of judgment that is not acceptable in Hays CISD. He was terminated from employment with the district for inappropriate behavior."

The Associated Press says that the fired teacher, whose name wasn't released, had worked for the district since November 2015.
